About our Principal

 McCall's Principal, Mrs. Carol May

I commit all of my energy and passion to ensuring that the student's educational experience is marked with respect, kindness, and a focus on educational achievement. My career began in Beach Park, Illinois as a special education teacher for students with social-emotional needs. I jumped at the opportunity to accept a position with Waukegan Public Schools, where I received my K-12 education. My educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Education from Illinois State University and a Master’s in Educational Leadership: School Leadership from Northeastern Illinois University. I have been an educator for over 20 years.  It was a delight to teach for seven years here at McCall School. The experience I obtained teaching in my special education classroom helped equip me with some of the necessary skills needed for school administration.

I became the proud principal of H.R. McCall School in July 2013. Before becoming principal, I had many leadership experiences including coaching teachers and serving as Elementary Assistant Principal at Clearview School, which averaged between 750-800 students at the time. During my tenure at H.R. McCall, our school was named Waukegan’s first-ever National Blue Ribbon School in the program's 38-year history.

On a personal note, my husband and I enjoyed raising our three children in the local area. We now have two college graduates, one of who is serving as a special education teacher in the Waukegan school district. We have one still enrolled in college. I genuinely understand parental involvement is essential for student success.

I have worked with the Waukegan community since 2006 and began my journey with Waukegan Public Schools in 2008. I have worked in various classroom roles including Pre-School, 1st, and 4th grade. I am a Bilingual certified teacher and most recently worked as an Instructional Coach within the school district. My various roles and experiences have solidified my passion for equity and excellence. My desire to further support teachers and students in their own growth journeys led me to obtain my Educational Leadership degree in 2019.
I operate with an open door policy and firmly believe we are a team. I look forward to working with you to develop strong school/home relationships and to continue the McCall tradition of high academic expectations within a student-friendly and engaging school community.
