Nurse's Notes

School Health Service

When your child becomes ill at school:

It is important for all parents and guardians to have a “sick day plan” for their child(ren).  A parent, friend, relative, or babysitter should be available at all times to pick up and transport your sick child from school.

It is expected that a parent, guardian, or someone you designate will be able to pick your child up within an hour of being notified.  Please make sure that all emergency contacts are current as emergency contacts may be asked to pick up sick children from school, if parents are unable to be contacted.

When to call your child in sick:

  • Fever of 100 degrees or higher
  • Complaints of nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea within 24 hours.

All contagious diseases must be reported to the School Nurse.

Medications at School (Board Policy 6031)

The school nurse is happy to assist you and your child with medications that need to be given at school.  If your child takes a daily medication, it should be given at home, before school. Children with asthma, even mild asthma, are encouraged to have an inhaler kept at school for emergencies.  Children with food allergies are required to have prescribed medication such as epinephrine and Benadryl kept at school. Any medication ordered three times a day should be given before school, after school and at bedtime.

ALL MEDICATIONS REQUIRE PARENT AND PHYSICIAN AUTHORIZATION AND MUST BE IN THE ORIGINAL CONTAINER. Students are not allowed to carry any type of medication, including cough drops, with the exception of an inhaler where the parent has authorized the student may self-carry and self-administer AFTER all appropriate authorization forms are completed and submitted to the school nurse. For questions about medications, please contact the school nurse.
